FAQ
Honest answers
Including to the questions most reading apps would rather you didn't ask.
Is speed reading even real?
Partly — and we’re honest about which part. Claims of thousands of words per minute with full comprehension are not supported by the research. What is real: most people read well below their potential, and deliberate practice measurably raises effective speed. That gap is what we train.
What is effective WPM?
Reading speed multiplied by comprehension. It’s the number we build everything on, because raw speed without understanding is just scrolling — and our server grades the comprehension half, so the number stays honest.
Can I cheat the speed test?
You can try. Click through without reading and the platform will tell you — warmly — that it wasn’t a real read, and decline to give you a number. Guess your answers at a normal pace and it notices that too. Refusing to flatter you is the product.
Do I need an account?
Not to find your reading speed — the three-minute test is free and anonymous. An account (also free) saves your number, unlocks the full Measured Baseline, and starts daily training.
What does it cost?
Right now: nothing — everything is free while we build. When paid tiers arrive, the free tier stays genuinely usable forever, and the paid tiers will be the least expensive serious trainer anywhere, because we run our own hardware.
What about my data?
Your reading data is yours: we don’t sell it, and everything runs on infrastructure we own — not rented clouds. Data export ships before paid tiers open, and if you ever leave, nothing is held hostage.
Will you shame me about my streak?
No. Streaks come with mercy built in — freezes and vacations — and the Coach speaks at most once a day, never at night, and only when it has something honest and specific to say.
Three minutes. One honest number.
